Burgers have become a staple of the American diet, with McDonald’s leading the charge. In the United States and other countries, hamburgers are sold at diners, fast-food restaurants, and specialty and high-end restaurants. But how did hamburgers come to be?

Hamburgers have an interesting history, and they probably originated in Hamburg, Germany.

The first hamburger as we know it today was served between two pieces of bread and was made popular by German immigrants who brought the recipe to America. Over time, hamburgers became more common across Germany’s many ports and cities, especially Hamburg, which likely gave burgers their name.

Today the hamburger is still one of the most popular meals in America, but it has expanded across the globe as well. According to National Today, burgers account for nearly 60% of all sandwiches sold globally. Europeans enjoy their own style of burgers with different toppings and sauces such as ketchup or mayo on top.
