In the middle of the 19th century, traditional type of art was being created, which would fit the exhibitions and conventional salons of that time. However, a group of professionals considered it really boring and wanted to do something different and lively. Meanwhile, the outdoors appealed to the artists, and they made paintings that were inspired by the plein air, known as en plein air paintings.

The new experiment was rejected by the salons, so the Parisian-based artists created their own society named as Société Anonyme Coopératives des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs in the 1870s and 1880s. They did this to showcase the developing style and to exhibit their artwork freely in a space where it is fully accepting. As a result, Impressionism appeared in the middle of the 19th century in France. It was initially criticized, but gained popularity in a shorter span. In fact, it spawned similar movements in music and literature societies over time.
