The 12 Caesars of Rome present an intriguing story. Most of them were in power when the Roman Empire was at the pinnacle of its power and influence. Each of the Caesars had an interesting and tragic story; some were murdered, some committed suicide, while others were either assassinated or elevated by the people to god status.

History has preserved their legacy as the twelve Caesars; their consecutive rule was from around 49 BC to roughly AS 96. During this time, Rome started out as a republic and became an empire that has inspired the West with its regal autocracy for over a thousand years.

The title ‘Caesar’ is derived from Julius Caesar, perhaps the best-known and most revered of Roman dictators. When the Julio-Claudians ended their line, their ancestral name was automatically joined to whoever became the heir (similar to the Pharaohs of Egypt).  Before this, the title of the emperor used to be ‘Augustus’.

There are quite a few biographies written about the 12 Roman Caesars and what they did during their rule. Their stories are caught up in a lot of family and social politics, along with conspiracies and various scandalous allegations. If anyone is interested in the Roman Caesars and their impact on the world, the Infographic below is a useful starting point:
