Mobile phones may have started out as a technology that seemed to be only for the wealthy folks. Fast forward a few decades, and we see almost every person with a mobile phone–in fact, a smartphone–in their hand. Whether it’s a successful businessman, an office clerk, a schoolteacher, or even a homeless person; having a smartphone is considered to be a necessity by many people in the United States. Interestingly, though, if we look at the best-selling mobile phones of all time, most of the devices on the list won’t be smartphones. 

If we look at the mobile phone industry by the numbers, we will see that the earlier models of mobile phones were very popular. What’s more, there weren’t so many choices at the turn of the century. Remember those standard Nokia phones that everyone seemed to have back in the day? Now that we have so many new models coming out almost every year, the competition for best-selling phones is tougher. As far as sales go, a Nokia model sold even more units than the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 plus.
