Early Life

Jordan going for a slam dunk for the Laney High School varsity basketball team

Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born at Cumberland Hospital in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn District of New York. Jordan is the son of bank employee Deloris and equipment supervisor James R. Jordan Sr. In 1968, the family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where Jordan attended Emsley A. Laney High School. In high school, he highlighted his athletic career by playing basketball, football, and baseball[1].

In his sophomore year, he tried out for the varsity basketball team. At that time, he was 5’11’’ (1.80m) but he was too short at the time to play at that level. On the other hand, his taller friend, Harvest Leroy Smith was able to get a part in the varsity basketball team. The rejection motivated him to prove himself. As a result, he became the star of the junior team of Laney High School. In the game, he scored 40-point games.

In the following summer, he trained rigorously and grew four inches taller to make it for the varsity basketball ball. As a result, he earned a berth on the varsity roster. Over the last two seasons in high school, Jordan served the team with an average of 25 points per game. When he was in his senior year, he got to play at the 1981 McDonald’s All-American Game. In this game, he scored 30 points after averaging 27 points, 6 assists, and 12 rebounds.

Later on, Jordan was recruited by numerous college basketball programs such as Virginia, Syracuse, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Duke. In 1981, he got a basketball scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he majored in cultural geography.

Career

College Career

Jordan, as a freshman in coach Dean Smith’s team-oriented system, received the title of ACC Freshman of the year when he scored 13.5 points per match on 53.4 percent of shots. In 1982, he made the winning jump shot in the NCAA Championship game against Georgetown, coached by future NBA rival Patrick Ewing. The winning jump shot was the turning point of Michael Jordan’s basketball career.

Over the three seasons with the Tar Heels, Jordan had averaged 17.7 points per game on 54.0 percent shooting and added 5.0 RPG. Later on, he was drafted by consensus to America’s NCAA First Team All-Star in his sophomore 1983 and youth 1984 seasons. After winning the Wooden College Player of the Year and Naismith awards in 1984, he left North Carolina before his graduation to compete in the 1984 NBA Draft.

In 1986, he returned to North Carolina to complete his education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography and in 2002 he was inducted into the ACC Men’s 50th-anniversary basketball team. It was in honor of the 50 greatest players in the history of ACC[2].

Professional Career

First issue of Sports Illustrated, August 16, 1954

The Chicago Bulls selected Jordan with the third overall pick after Sam Bowie (Portland Trail Blazers) and Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston Rockets) in the 1984 NBA Draft. One of the main reasons Jordan was not selected earlier was that the top needed a center player. The Trail Blazers general manager Stu Inman argued that it was not about picking a center but rather passing Sam Bowie against Jordan [3].

The reason behind the selection of Jordan was that Portland was already having Clyde Drexler on the team. Drexler was a skilled player just like Jordan. During his rookie season with the Bulls, Jordan averaged 28.2 points per game on 51.5% shots. His performance in the match helped to build a team that won 35% of the games over three seasons, previously competing in the playoffs. He became a fan favorite even in opposing contexts.

Roy S. Johnson of The New York Times described Jordan as a phenomenal Bulls rookie. Later on, he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the fans voted for Jordan to start the All-Star Game during his rookie season. Several veteran players, led by Isiah Thomas, were upset about the attention that Michael Jordan gained from the fans.

As a result, the controversy left Jordan relatively unresponsive when he returned to regular season play. It was a freeze-out on Jordan by the veteran players. The Bulls finished the season 38-44 and in four games they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of playoffs.

Michael Jordan’s Injury

Logo of 1986 NBA Playoffs

It is an often-cited moment of August 26, 1985, when Michael Jordan rocked the sand at a Nike exhibition match in Trieste, Italy. He shattered the glass on the back panel with a dunk. The moment was filmed and often mentioned across the globe as a milestone in Jordan’s career [4].

At that time, the shoes he was wearing were auctioned in August 2020 and they were sold for $615,000. It was a record for a pair of sneakers. The second season of Jordan was cut short because he broke his foot in the third game of the year. As a result, he was not able to play 64 games.

Despite Jordan’s injury, the Bulls made the playoffs with a 30-52 record. It was the fifth-worst record in the history of the NBA for any team to advance to the playoffs. When Michael Jordan recovered from his foot injury, he performed well in the playoffs.

The Bulls’ games against the 1985-86 Boston Celtics team are often considered the best games in the history of the NBA. Jordan made an unbreakable record of 63 in game 2. However, the Celtics were able to sweep the series away.

Post Foot Recovery

Michael Jordan made a full recovery during the 1986-87 season. He enjoyed one of the most prolific scoring seasons in the history of the NBA. He became the only player to score 3,000 points in one season other than Wilt Chamberlain. He led the team with average points at 37.1 and he had the league’s highest at 48.2 percent shooting.

Jordan also demonstrated defensive prowess by becoming the first player in the NBA’s history with a record of 200 interceptions and 100 blocked shots in one season. Despite the success of Jordan, Magic Johnson won the NBA award of Most Valuable Player.

Best Games of Michael Jordan’s Career

Jordan as a member of Washington Wizards April 14, 2003

A Season Of Dominance

In the 1987-88 season, Michael Jordan topped the league by scoring 35 points per game. He was named Defensive Player of the Year and he won the MVP Award. The next top scorer was Dominique Wilkins with 30 points per game. On the other hand, Jordan played 82 games and a 5-point differential 82 times makes a pretty wide margin [5].

Jordan has been selected nine times to the  NBA All-Defensive First Team. But in the same year, he won the Defensive Player of the Year Award. He has been the best player in the NBA on defense and also the best player on offense. On top of all that, he won the year’s dunk contest. To everyone’s surprise, it was only his fourth season in the NBA, although he missed many games because of injury.

During the 1988-89 season, Jordan averaged points of 32. 8 rebounds per game, and had eight assists per game.

Unstoppable Offense

Talking about the unstoppable offense of Michael Jordan, he led the NBA in scoring 10 times. It was during his third season when he led the score by 10 times. He would also lead the league in scoring every season until he retired for a second time to play for Washington.

He has dominated the league scoring every season he has played alongside his rookie year with the last two with the Wizards. At that time, he was 39 and 40 years old and the only player in NBA history to score the most points in a single season was Wilt Chamberlain.

Even though Chamberlain was able to score incredibly, Jordan was still better at points per game average. He has won 10 NBA scorer titles while Chamberlain has won seven. No other player has been able to come near his dominance in the league.

George Gervin, Kevin Durant, and Allen Iverson were next with 4 title winnings. It’s almost half the year Jordan has dominated the league in scoring. On the other hand, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record for points scored in his career and led the league only twice. Hence, Jordan was the league’s top scorer and averaged points per game more than anyone in the league.

Legendary Defense

When you mention defense, you have to talk about the legendary defense of Michael Jordan. As mentioned earlier, he has been called to the NBA’s first defensive team nine times. It makes it the biggest first-team pick in the history of the NBA. Jordan shared the honor with Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Gary Payton. During the 1987-88 season, Jordan won the Defensive Player of the Year award, which is rare for a point guard.

Only three guards were appointed DPY; Michael Jordan, Gary Payton, and Sidney Moncrief. For three seasons, Jordan led the NBA in interceptions. On the other hand, Chris Paul is the only player who has led the league in interceptions more times than Michael Jordan. But still, Michael Jordan stands at the top as the defensive player in the league more times than any other player.

The Classics

Michael Jordan has been named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) five times. He is the only player who has been named the MVP more times than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Also, Jordan has six rings which is more than any other player except for the Celtics player of the 1950s and 1960s named Robert Horry. On the six rings, Jordan was the MVP of the final six times. On the other hand, the next closest player has three rings.

Legacy of Michael Jordan

Jordan dunking the ball, 1987-88

Jordan’s talent was apparent from his first NBA season. In November 1984, he was compared to Julius Erving. According to Larry Bird, Michael Jordan was the best player he had ever seen and he is one of a kind. As an athlete, he is comparable to Wayne Gretzky. Jordan received a standing ovation for a minute in his first game at Madison Square Garden played against Now York Knicks [6].

On April 20, 1986, after setting the playoff in a 63-point game against the Boston Celtics, Bird described Jordan as God in him. Jordan led the NBA in scoring for 10 seasons and tied the record of Wilt Chamberlain of seven consecutive scoring titles.

Jordan also has the best playoff and regular-season scoring averages such as 33.4 and 30.1 points per game, respectively. As a key player, in 1998, the season of his final winning shot against the Jazz is well known throughout the league. In the regular season, Jordan was the main Bulls threat in the closing seconds of a close game and into the playoffs.

Highest All-Time Scorer

Plaque-at-United-center-showing-Jordans-achievements-during-his-career

His main threat was that he always asked for the ball at the decisive moment. His playoff points are a total of 5,987 and they are the second-highest in NBA history. At the time of his retirement, he had total points of 32,292 in the regular season. As a result, he was ranked in the fifth position in the NBA’s All-Time Scoring list led by Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Karl Malone, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

He is one of the most decorated basketball players in the history of the NBA with five regular-season MVPs. Jordan has gained six Finals MVPs and three All-Star MVPs. Also, he finished in the top three in the regular season 10 times in MVP voting. In 1996, he was named one of the top 50 players in the history of the NBA. Among the seven players in history, he has won an Olympic Gold Medal, NBA Championship, and NCAA Championship.

In 1976, the NBA merged with the American Basketball Association and from that time, Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan were the only two players to win six NBA finals for their team.

He had a long relationship with Gatorade as he appeared in more than 20 commercials for the company beginning in 1991. He also appeared in commercials such as Be Like Me in which the children who wanted to be like Jordan sang a song [7].

Lee as Blackmon tried to find the source of Jordan’s abilities but he was convinced that it must be the shoes. The hype of these shoes went so high that people even had their sneakers stolen at gunpoint.

Later on, Nike transformed the Jordan line into another division named Jordan Brand. As a result, the company had an impressive list of celebrities and athletes as sponsors. Also, Nike sponsored college athletics programs in such places as Marquette, Georgetown, California, and North Carolina.

Because Jordan had been associated with Looney Tunes cartoon characters, Nike aired an ad during the Super Bowl XXVI in 1992. The ad showed Bugs Bunny and Jordan playing basketball. The Super Bowl commercial was an inspiration for the 1996 live-action/animated movie named Space Jam.

Bugs Bunny and Jordan also appeared together in several commercials for MCI. And, in 1992, he appeared in the music video for Michael Jackson’s Jam.
